A Progressive China Policy: An Interview with Jake Werner Part 2
China warns Trump: Good luck bringing jobs back to U.S.
After President-elect Donald Trump, Vice President-elect Mike Pence and Carrier Corporations came to the conclusion of keeping nearly 1,000 factory jobs in the US, the Global Times published an analysis piece titled “China would benefit from Trump’s effort to bring manufacturing jobs back to the U.S.”
“It will be almost impossible for the [U.S.] to restore its glory as a major manufacturing powerhouse under his presidency,” the piece states. This is referring to the fact that, if companies such as Apple move factory jobs back to America, the costs of their products will rise. This, in the face of similar smartphone makers from China like Huawei or Xiaomi, threatens American brands and gives China the chance for its own state owned enterprises to branch out internationally. Many Sino-American relations experts call this article a PR stunt, and believe that China is simply worried about Trump’s route during presidency. China is already experiencing slower growth, currently at 6.7%, which worries the government.
This initiative to keep manufacturing jobs within America is part of Trump’s plan to keep jobs within America. One problematic aspect of this plan is that manufacturing jobs are being increasingly lost to robots and automation. Going back to America’s manufacturing glory days will be troublesome given this automation, and will result in higher prices for consumers.
